Common Issues and Solutions for PE Pipe

Apr. 07, 2026

During the construction of PE pipes, common issues mainly include joint quality, pipe floating, backfill damage, and thermal expansion/contraction. Proper and timely solutions to these problems are key to ensuring the quality and service life of PE pipe projects.

1. Leakage at Pipe Joints

Issue: Water seepage at joints, failure during pressure testing.

Solution: Strictly follow standard procedures for butt fusion or electrofusion welding, controlling heating temperature, duration, and cooling time. Clean the oxide layer from the pipe ends before welding and ensure proper alignment. After welding, conduct a visual inspection—the bead should be uniform and free of notches or voids. Unqualified joints must be cut out and re-welded.

2. Pipe Floating and Displacement

Issue: Empty pipes float due to buoyancy in high groundwater or rainy conditions, causing displacement.

Solution: Lay a stable bedding layer at the bottom of the trench, backfill, and compact in sections promptly. Add water inside the pipe as temporary ballast during construction, and drain only after the backfill above the pipe is sufficient to resist buoyancy. Use temporary anchor blocks or weights if necessary.

3. Pipe Damage from Backfill

Issue: Sharp stones or hard objects in backfill material scratch or crack the pipe wall during compaction.

Solution: Use fine sand or soft soil for backfill within 30cm below and above the pipe. No gravel or debris is allowed. Backfill in layers, each not exceeding 30cm, and compact manually or with small tools. Avoid direct compaction over the pipe with heavy machinery.

4. Joint Separation Due to Thermal Expansion/Contraction

Issue: Temperature changes cause linear expansion or contraction, stressing joints and leading to separation.

Solution: Leave a snaking layout in the trench to accommodate length changes, and install expansion joints or compensators where needed. Ensure uniform compaction on both sides of the pipe to restrict axial movement.

Through standardized construction, process control, and timely inspection, the above issues can be effectively avoided, ensuring the long-term safe operation of the PE pipe system.
